OBA London Chapter Volunteer Day Recap

12/07/2010

On Saturday, 3 July, the OBA London Chapter started a new tradition aimed at giving back to the community. Our first Volunteer Day brought out 15 people to help build an adventure playground for the children of Islington. Work included some substantial heavy labour in the morning, but Oxford alumni were up to the task! Digging four trenches and a drainage hole before noon, we employed 13 shovels, a jackhammer, and 15 sets of gloves.

The afternoon (after burritos for all donated by the one and only Chipotle!) was spent protecting sharp edges with rope, watering plants, installing railings, and general finishing. In addition to supplying the labour, the OBA raised over £3000 to help pay for materials. These materials will be part of the playground's second phase (including highflying treehouse walkways and a giant slide).

Thanks to everyone who volunteered, and thanks to all who couldn't make it but supported the project with "Donation Only" tickets. After the success of our fundraising program, the OBA London Chapter has decided to reopen our donation window until Thursday 22 July. Subsequently, all OBA Network members and guests are invited to attend the 24 July Adventure Playground Grand Opening, where we will present the Islington Play Authority with the classic 'mega check' showing our financial support for the kids of Islington.
